Entrance of the gallery space where you will find Digital prints created from 1997 to the present. The inkjet process used by modern day printers has virtually replaced the earlier silkscreen/serigraph process where colour is laid down layer upon layer. Digital manipulation of the images through Photoshop have opened up an entirely new creative world for artists.

The series of “Still Life with Subconscious Intrusions” and “Premonitions of Conflict” were originally part of a group of slide images. These were projected in a rapid stream as a “Commercial” inside the performance “the Battlefield” 1st performed in 1990 in the Assembly Hall of the ADFA, Canberra. This performance took the form of a war game & preceded the 1st Gulf War by 6 months. With the projected slide images, an TV news voice intoned fragments from a catalogue which sold armaments together with its sales pitch. These slides were stored in Kodak carousels ready for later projection. While in storage they became water damaged; the slide dye dissolved & ran down the slide and mould grew over the gelatine surface. My first instinct was to dump all the slides in the garbage bin. On reflection, however, the images now had the patina of having survived a holocaust with a specific message to tell. It seemed an appropriate development in their life. The damaged slides were scanned at high resolution, further manipulated in Photoshop and printed as the series “Still Life with Subconscious Intrusions” and “Premonitions of Conflict”. The specific image #2 belongs to the latter series. Arthur Wicks
